EU project learnings: from materials development to application
The FET-Open and Pathfinder EU projects focus on cutting-edge, high-risk/high-impact interdisciplinary research, often involving new materials manufacturing approaches for novel technologies.
Recently, two EU FET Open projects held a joint conference:
The EU FET Open project SiComb is about using laser light to create spectral lines (distinct, narrow lines in a spectrum) through new technology developed from SiC materials. The created spectral lines can be used to significantly increase data transmission capacity (to more than 100 TB/s), which is over 100 times the capacity of current technology.
The EU FET Open project SiC nano for picoGeo explores a highly sensitive mechanical strain sensor using cubic silicon carbide. This technology aims to develop a ground strain measurement system for geohazard monitoring, offering precise measurements of slow-moving and small strain transients preceding volcanic eruptions and earthquakes with 100 times greater sensitivity than current technology.
Materials manufacturing is not only essential for spearhead projects.
For example, India is boosting its semiconductor sector with the India Semiconductor Mission, a strategic initiative aimed at strengthening the country’s semiconductor ecosystem. At a recent conference, it was clear that manufacturing is crucial for future growth and resilience. The International Conference on Emerging Semiconductor Materials and Applications (ICESMA) in Hyderabad discussed lessons learned from missing the manufacturing opportunity 20 years ago in polycrystalline silicon. Now, SiC manufacturing faces challenges in growth and adaptation to new technologies.
In SiComb, transitioning from development to application in Work Package 3 is challenging. At the webinar, we will share learnings and discuss the learnings in relation to manufacturing of emerging technologies, which are part of larger contexts (regional development through smart specialisation, national growth, the Chips Act, Sustainable Green Manufacturing, etc.).
